HISTORY

The College was established in 1989 as the College of Fisheries Science, renamed the College of Life and Resource Sciences in 2001, and reestablished the College of Life Sciences in 2005. The College has three departments (Department of Food Science, Department of Aquaculture, and Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology), two institutes (Institute of Marine Biology, and Institute of Food Safety and Risk Management), one Ph.D program (Marine Biotechnology), one B.A. program (Marine Biotechnology), and three affiliated facilities (Terrestrial Animal Experimental Center, Biotechnology Education and Research Center, and Fisheries Extension Committee). There are 74 full-time faculty members. Except Insitute of Marine Biology offers Master and Doctorate degree, other departments offer B.A., Master and Doctorate degrees.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

The objective is to educate and train students as professionals in marine biological science, and to apply scientific principles to meet the requirements of today's society and industries. The College provides an integrated program across departments offering five interdisciplinary programs including the Biotechnology, Marine Biodiversity, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Applied Cheimisry and Biology, and Bioinformatics programs.

FEATURE

Over the last three years, the College has received more than NT$587 million in grants from Ministry of Science and Technology, Council of Agriculture, and private sectors from 2014 to 2016. Research results by the faculty have been published in several prominent international journals. There is a total of 545 SCI (Science Citation Index) scientific papers published from 2013 to 2015. Our faculty members have received numerous awards and honors. There are five National Chairs, and six Academic Awards from the Ministry of Education, and twenty nine Outstanding Awards, and twelve Appointed Researcher Awards from the National Science Council.

PROSPECT

Two new buildings were constructed in 2007. They are "Aquatic Animal Center" and "Terrestrial Animal Experimental Center". Another building, Life Sciences Building were constructed in 2010. Our current research activities cover marine biology, marine biological resource, marine bioscience, biotechnology, food processing, food safety, and sustainable aquaculture. We continue to establish international cooperation programs, including assigned agreements with foreign Universities to exchange scholars and students. We strengthen to offer English lectures for foreign students under the programs of Taiwan Scholarship, Pacific Taiwan Scholarship and International Center for Developmental and Education Fund.
